Hello Megan,
If you PM me with your address, I will post the score keys off to you, or perhaps you would like me to wait until we have finished with this year's PACE score keys, and then post them off to you - all that I require is the cost of the postage.

Please let me know what you decide.
Blessings,

Summer Nature Study and More
by Katie's Homeschool Cottage

Would you like to enjoy a nature walk or nature study, but you worry about covering those formal areas of science in biology, physics, and chemistry?

This nature study allows you to enjoy nature and time with your child outdoors. At the same time you will help guide him and make connections between his natural world around him and more formal scientific concepts.

The Summer Nature Study and More has topics for June, July and August. Each month has several topics pertinent to the season. For each topic, you receive living book reading suggestions, questions to promote discussion of the topic during your nature walk, suggested nature walk or post-walk activities, and scientific connection topics.

The scientific connection topics extend your nature study observations into a study of scientific concepts in biology, physical science, or chemistry. You receive a list of suggested living books and a list of experiments and activities related to the extended topic.

For example, a nature study of bird and animal migration extends into a study of the earth's magnetic fields and magnetism.

Also included throughout the book is poetry relevant to each topic in the nature study to use as copywork or literature study.

At the back of the book is a section offering recommendations in nature journaling and sketching . There are also nature journal notebooking pages to use during your nature study to write your observations or copywork and make sketches of your topics of study.

This nature study method helps you and your child bridge the information you gather from your personal experiences and observations with formal scientific concepts. So, get ready to ditch those science textbooks, delve into your natural living world and guide your child into experiencing science the natural and personal way!

German Homeschooled Children Return Home under Court Supervision

The Wunderlich family were delighted that a local juvenile court decided to return custody of their four children after they were seized in a surprise visit by French social workers on September 28.

Homeschooling in France is legal, now. There was an attempt to impose restrictions on homeschoolers several years ago, but it was defeated in the French legislature.

Calls Needed to Reunite Homeschool Family
« Result #8 on Oct 11, 2009, 2:22pm »

Dominic Johannson was seized from his parents just as their plane was ready to take off. Please pray for him and his parents that they will be reunited and soon. [image]

This is an email that I received from the HSLDA, and I believe that it's about time that we banded together as homeschoolers to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Here, in Australia, we take for granted the privilege of homeschooling, and even though it is legal in Sweden, this family has been torn apart.

Calls Needed to Reunite Homeschool Family

We recently told you about the plight of the Johanssons, a Swedish family whose only child, 7-year-old Dominic Johansson, was seized by Swedish police from a plane just as the family was about to leave the country for a new life in India.

After investigating the facts surrounding the case, HSLDA President J. Michael Smith wrote to Swedish officials to protest this action.

Read his letter >>

Read the response from Mr. Berglind, minister of public affairs for the Swedish Embassy in Washington >>

Citing confidentiality concerns for not commenting on the Johansson case, Mr. Stigland noted that a county administrative board in Sweden is reviewing how it was handled by local officials.

In a telephone conversation with HSLDA, Mr. Johansson confirmed that he has been in contact with the county administrative board.

“They told me that they are looking into the case to determine if anything was done improperly,” he said.

And at a meeting with the social workers on Tuesday, October 6, Mr. Johansson was told that he and his wife would only be allowed to visit their son at the social workers office once every two weeks for a maximum of two hours.

What does Sweden hope to gain from such an aggressive action? The situation is tragic. It is deeply troubling that a Western democracy would go to such lengths to prevent a homeschool family from simply trying to leave the country.

Dominic has been traumatized, and his mother has been hospitalized several times because of the depression this incident has caused. Yet the social workers persist in keeping custody of Dominic. When Mr. Johansson asks why, they reply “Because it’s better for him.” According to Mr. Johansson, both he and Dominic have been subjected to psychological and other testing with results showing no valid reason for continued separation of the family.

In light of this aggressive behavior and because the Swedish parliament is poised to impose draconian regulations on homeschoolers, HSLDA is asking its members to contact the Swedish Ambassador to the United States.

Swedish Ambassador Jonas Hafström can be reached:

By email: ambassaden.washington@foreign.ministry.se
By phone: 202-467 2600
By fax: 202-467 2699

Visit Swedish embassy website >>

First, we ask you to request that the Swedish government return Dominic to his family. The social welfare agency has taken custody of Dominic, and they have the power to return him to his parents. Request that they do so immediately.

Second, inform the ambassador that homeschooling allows children to thrive academically and socially. Valid research has demonstrated that homeschooling is a mainstream educational approach that works. Tell him that the world doesn’t need any more countries like Germany that repress freedom in education, and that a person should be permitted to opt out of public education because of philosophical or religious convictions.

In his letter to Mr. Smith, Mr. Stigland noted that since Sweden is a state party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, that the starting point for children is Sweden is the “…best interests of the child and the child’s right to be heard….” Mr. Stigland noted that social services have an obligation to “intervene and remove a child from the family if the child’s health and development are endangered.” Mr. Stigland noted that a child should be returned home as soon as possible if it was “in the best interests of the child.”

Of grave concern to HSLDA is Mr. Stigland’s citation of the legislative history of the Education Act which says: “The legislative history of the current Education Act states that home schooling in isolated cases, mainly in the lower grades, might be an acceptable substitute for education if a particular external circumstance exists. Examples of such are: if the child lives in a sparsely populated area or needs special care. Legal practice shows that the situation also arises when parents for other reasons, such as philosophical or religious, want to educate their children at home. In connection with the new Education Act, these rules are now being reviewed.”

The act is indeed being reviewed and the proposal is even more draconian. The proposed language would remove philosophical or religious convictions as valid reasons to home school. The new law would allow homeschooling only in “extraordinary circumstances” (read: never). If the proposed Swedish law passes it would become as bad as in Germany where homeschooling is effectively banned.

Mike Farris recently said in his address to the World Congress of Families, “Any nation that severely restricts the ability of parents to choose alternative forms of education, including home education, in the name of creating national unity, cannot call itself a free nation. Freedom necessarily requires the individual to have the liberty to think differently and believe differently than programs instituted by the current rulers of any nation. Educational freedom is the cornerstone for all freedom of thought and conscience.”

HSLDA encourages its members to communicate their concerns to the Swedish Ambassador. We hope that his influence may help correct an injustice and also pave the way for better laws for homeschoolers in Sweden

HSLDA thanks its members and friends for their ongoing support. It’s when all homeschoolers join together that we are most effective advocating for homeschool freedom in America and abroad.

Diana Waring conferences in New Zealand and Australia

Diana Waring is well loved for her bright enthusiastic presentation of history. Extremely happily married since 1979, Bill and Diana homeschooled their three children nearly twenty years. The Waring children (now all grown) were the proving grounds for all the concepts and encouragements Bill and Diana teach in real-life examples of the wonders of home schooling!

They will be visiting Australia and New Zealand in September and October this year. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to hear an inspiring experienced home schooler.

Diana and Bill have worked in speaking and writing for the Christian home school and private school community for 18 years. Through their business/ministry Diana Waring Presents (formerly, Diana Waring—History Alive!), they have met and talked with home schoolers in 46 states, half of Canada, and three other continents.

The curriculum for world history study Diana wrote, beginning in 1994, has been growing and expanding. She is in the midst of a five year effort to update and expand the research and presentation of the material. She is well known for her rapid-fire history recordings and workshops, but is also appreciated for her workshops and books of home school encouragement, like Beyond Survival and Reaping the Harvest.

Please be in quick now if you would like to come to these conferences. Some workshop options are getting pretty full and some may already be closed.

Have you told your friends, neighbours and relations about these conferences?
We often have people coming to us after a conference saying that they have only just heard about it.
So please pass the word around about these conferences.

Bill and Diana arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday tonight.

For more information about the conferences please go to:

Writing the Visual, Kinesthetic, Auditory Alphabet
by Child 1st Publications

Writing the Visual, Kinesthetic, and Auditory Alphabet is full of tips on engaging the students in the learning and remembering of the letters, how to write them and what sounds they make.

There are many hints for preventing backwards letters, and much more. This approach works because young children learn new information most easily when new concepts are tied to movements and to visual object with which they are already familiar.

We have chosen to approach the task of writing the alphabet by using wording that will allow the child to imagine actually DOING what they hear you say. Each letter lesson ends with fun activities that allow children to practice their new letter and thus deepen their learning.

Writing the ....Alphabet may be used on its own, but is far more effective with our Child 1st Alphabet with the charming visuals that help children remember their letter shapes and sounds! After your download, print the file two sided and staple in the middle to make your book.

The MOTHER of all Birth Rallies
« Result #18 on Aug 8, 2009, 10:20pm »

Women and their families are travelling from all over the country to attend the MOTHER of all birth rallies on Monday September 7, 2009.

The rally is to take place outside Parliament House at 11.30am, we are expecting a HUGE turn out and plenty of media attention.

We have been contacted by many women who have been told by QANTAS that they will need to reschedule their flights as they have booked too many babies on their flights to Canberra over the 3 days surrounding the rally, this has apparently never happened before. If you are booked to travel by plane to Canberra it may be worth ringing the airline to check as some women have been told that they could be turned away at the airport because by law they are only allowed to have 8 babies per flight.

We will be presenting our petition to the Health Minister during the rally. We have had an incredible response and have recieved 17,765 signatures in support of a woman's right to choose homebirth with a midwife.

HBA are pleased to be subsidising some buses and accomodation from Sydney and Melbourne to Canberra for midwifery students and others who may not otherwise have been able to attend the rally. The support from so many has been overwhelming and heartwarming and we couldn't possibly attempt to thank each of you individually, however you know who you are and we deeply thank you.

UNABLE TO ATTEND THE RALLY?

If you can't be with us on September 7, please purchase a virtual rally ticket. Send us your headshot and message (please make this less than 25 words as it will need to be scribed) and we will create a cutout to place in the ground outside Parliament House. Your pledge will go towards the printing and assembly of your 'cutout' and will enable HBA to subsidise the travel and accommodation of those who may not otherwise be able to attend. To purchase a virtual rally ticket please go to http://www.homebirthaustralia.org/virtual-rally-ticket

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Canberra.

Warm regards

Jo Hunter

 Peril by Choice
« Result #20 on Aug 6, 2009, 8:17pm »

This is a copy of a post that I made to my blog, and I thought that people might be interested in the review of this book.

The book, Peril by Choice is the story of John and Elaine Beekman, Wycliffe Bible translators in Mexico.

John Beekman started life with a heart murmur and poor circulation, but decided that he would rather give fewer years of service to those who had never heard of the Gospel than many more years to those who have already heard the Gospel message.

The story is about how John and his wife, Elaine took the Gospel to the Chol Indians and worked as linguists to help publish the Chol New Testament. Their lives were not always happy-go-lucky, as their first baby, Sharon died shortly after birth, and of a heart condition similar to that of her father. When Sharon died, Elaine was told that she would be able to comfort the Chol women with her testimony because they lose many babies.

However, they go on to have another baby, Judy, who became known as "the miracle baby", and was 'adopted' by one of the Chol Indians named Madam Mercy.

John and Elaine worked well as a team, with John translating in the New Testament, while Elaine translated hymns. The Chol people loved their hymns and often walked around singing, so the hymns were a wonderful way to get the Gospel message into their hearts.

John Beekman encouraged one translator by telling her to make small goals. With small goals, you gain a sense of achievement each time you meet one.

Peril by Choice shows how translators and linguists work to help spread the message of the Gospel, and is one that we have studied in Introduction to Missions through Australian Christian College. Our children have thoroughly enjoyed this novel, so I have also read it, enjoying it immensely, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting to read an excellent biography.

Benefits Flow in Schooling at Home
« Result #23 on Jul 22, 2009, 4:27pm »

This year 2342 children are registered with the Department of Education for home schooling, nearly double the 1197 registered just four years ago. Over the past year the number has grown by 17.5 per cent.

Care to read more, please click here.

The benefits of homeschooling are many and varied, some of which are the lack of bullying, positive socialisation and the ability to pursue career choices that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

My son is presently pursuing a career in web design, but whether he takes it up for a living is entirely up to him. At the moment it is what he is enjoying studying. Isn't that what homeschooling is all about?

We also enjoy the ability to study subjects that are interesting to us, and be able to chase "bunny trails" if we are inclined that way.

We enjoy being able to study using a wholly Christian curriculum, knowing that evolution will not be a part of it. :o My school years were spent in the public sector, and I feel that the teaching of evolution deprived me of a substantial education, and what I learned there, I have had to re-learn since. ;D

I guess that the thing that I enjoy most about homeschooling is being able to see our children growing up and sharing precious moments with them - a gentle hug, a quiet word, the "I love you" during the day when they would otherwise be at school. ;)

 A VERY INTERESTING CONVERSATION
« Result #27 on Jul 9, 2009, 9:11pm »

This was in an email that I received from a good friend. ;D

An Atheist Professor of Philosophy was speaking to his Class on the Problem Science has
with GOD, the ALMIGHTY. He asked one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .

Professor : You are Christian, aren't you, son ?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So, you Believe in GOD ?
Student : Absolutely, sir.
Professor : Is GOD Good ?
Student : Sure.
Professor : Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ?
Student : Yes.
Professor : My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill.
But GOD didn't. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

(Student was silent )

Professor : You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, Young Fella.
Is GOD Good?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Is Satan good ?
Student : No.
Professor : Where does Satan come from ?
Student : From . . . GOD . . .
Professor : That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student : Yes.
Professor : So who created evil ?

(Student did not answer)

Professor : Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness?
All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So, who Created them ?

(Student had no answer)

Professor : Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World around you.
Tell me, son . . Have you ever Seen GOD?
Student : No, sir.
Professor : Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor : Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD?
Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Professor : Yet you still Believe in HIM?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol,
Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my Faith.
Professor : Yes, Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.

Student
: Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?
Professor : Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as Cold?
Professor : Yes.
Student : No, sir. There isn't.

(The Lecture Theatre became very quiet with this turn of events )

Student : Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat,
a Little Heat or No Heat.
But we don't have anything called Cold.
We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that.
There is no such thing as Cold.
Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat.
We cannot Measure Cold.
Heat is Energy.
Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.

(There was Pin-Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre )

Student : What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?
Professor : Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir.
Darkness is the Absence of Something
You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . .
But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and it's called Darkness, isn't it?
In reality, Darkness isn't.
If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?
Professor : So what is the point you are making, Young Man ?
Student : Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor : Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student : Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality.
You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GOD and a Bad GOD.
You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure.
Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought.
It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.
To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that
Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing.
Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey?
Professor : If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument was going )

Student : Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and
Cannot even prove that this Process is an On-Going Endeavour,
Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir?
Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?

(The Class was in Uproar )

Student : Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?

(The Class broke out into Laughter )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . .
No one appears to have done so.
So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol,
Science says that You have No Brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir?

(The Room was Silent. The Professor stared at the Student, his face unfathomable)

Professor : I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student : That is it sir . . . Exactly !
The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH.
That is all that Keeps Things Alive and Moving.

NB:

I believe you have enjoyed the Conversation . . . and if so . .
You'll probably want your Friends / Colleagues to enjoy the same . . . won't you?
Forward them to Increase their Knowledge . . . or FAITH.
That student was Albert Einstein!

 Sweden's Attempt to Ban Homeschooling
« Result #28 on Jul 4, 2009, 5:38pm »

A blogging friend of mine wrote about Sweden's attempt to ban homeschooling. :o

Homeschooling will NOT be permitted for those referring to philosophical or religious reasons according to the European convention on Human Rights! :'(

A legal and very successful alternative to school is about to be erased, without any grounds or research! Rohus is a review-organisation, and we will write a massive review.

For this reason, we ask you to join in supporting our work – sign the petition! We will use it together with our review, among other things.

Please sign the petition - there is one to sign for people outside of Sweden, and that is the one that I have linked to.

I completed my Education Tax Refund today, and while it was VERY different 'talking' to a machine, it was very quick - less than five minutes. ;)

That is, after I changed my address details and worked out what I was supposed to put in at 'L' on the taxation form. :-[

However, gone are the days when you get to talk to a real person, and if perchance a real person answers the phone, you nearly drop the darned thing because you get such a shock! :o

Oh, by the way, there is a website that is dedicated to the Education Tax Refund, and it is:

 Global Warming Isn't Real
« Result #31 on Jun 24, 2009, 2:48pm »

Family First Senator Steve Fielding has just stated that there is not enough evidence to corroborate "global warming" being real. ;) Well done, Senator Fielding - there aren't many people who will stand up and be counted!

Temperatures have been both rising and falling since the time of Noah's flood, and while temperatures will rise for a short while, equally, in a few years time, they will fall again.

If you would like to know where to find the truth about debunking the myths of Climate Change, go to:
http://www.creationresearch.net/items%20subjects/Global-Warming.htm

Creation Research also have some wonderful DVD's debunking the myths about Climate Change, and John Mackay does an excellent job of proving it, Biblically.

This was an email that I received from Christian Homeschooling in Australia - please vote!

Please pass this information onto others. Thankyou

There is currently a poll going on a regional German radio station as a result of news coverage of a family who fled the area for the United States and is seeking refuge there.

The question is "Should parents be allowed to homeschool their own children?"

German homeschoolers are asking us to vote "Ja" for/with them.

[At the beginning of their day it was 80% against. 3 hours later it was
about 50:50 but leaning towards 'against' as this reflects the way the press are presenting the issue as well as 'popular opinion']

Here is the link:

http://hef.org.nz/

or

http://hef.org.nz/2009/vote-yes-allowing-parents-to-homeschool-in-germany/

When I voted at 12:23, 23rd June 2009, the results were:
JA 62%
NEIN 38%

So when you vote:

Ja means Yes

Jetzt abstimmen means now vote

Ansehen means to look at, consider

Please pass this information onto others. Thankyou

What is a True Friend?

Definition

friend (noun):
1. A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.
2. A person whom one knows; an acquaintance.

Friends are special people. If you have a special friend in your life, it is because God wants them there. There are no coincidences in this life - only Godincidences! Sometimes God places people in our lives for a season, and when that season is over, they, like the birds, fly away.

A friend is someone who:

* listens and hears what you have to say.

* cares about you.

* you can trust implicitly.

* you can depend upon.

* is never judgemental.

* will call you on the telephone just to say hello, and to let you know they care.

* will visit, sometimes bringing a cake or just calling in to say hi, have a cuppa with you and touch base.

* you can share your pain, sadness or happiness with.

* accepts people for who they are, and where they are in their walk with Christ, and doesn't try to change them.

* will only give constructive criticism.

* will not say things that will hurt the other's feelings.

* doesn't gossip about you behind your back.

* loves your faults as well as your good points.

* lets you have your say, too.

A true friend is special - a blessing from our Heavenly Father, but there are very few true friends. I consider myself really blessed to have several really close friends, and that is what this Bible verse says - it is better to have one really good friend than many acquaintances.

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly, and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24

The Tennessee House of Representatives recently adopted House Resolution 87, “[a] resolution calling on the Federal Republic of Germany to recognize the rights of parents to raise their children.

State Representative John DeBarry proposed the resolution, which recognizes “the importance of religious liberties and the right of parents to determine their children’s upbringing and the method in which their education should be provided.” It acknowledges that parental rights are essential to excellence in education and explains that home educated students have demonstrated “high standards of academic achievement and citizenship.” It then urges the Federal Republic of Germany to “recognize the basic, fundamental rights of parents and allow its citizens to determine the educational upbringing of their own children.”

ACC Distance Education Studies in South Australia
« Result #41 on Jun 2, 2009, 12:19pm »

This year we started learning with the Australian Christian College, under their School of Distance Education.

The curriculum that is used is PACE's (Packets of Accelerated Christian Education), and they are very thorough. Both of our children are currently undertaking their year 10 certificate, which will enable them to continue on to their year 12. ;)

Each child sets their own goals for the day, and are responsible for completing the goals set. To me, this seems a very thorough way of learning, and my son, who was having trouble with English is now flying through his English each day, with a deeper understanding of the English language. ;D

The subjects that we are studying this year are:

  • Bible
  • Maths
  • English
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Word Building
  • Elective - Life of Christ
  • German - Rosetta Stone German
  • Music - The Elements of Music
  • Computer - Adobe Photoshop CS4

ACC has an extensive range of curriculum subjects, and it is a Christian education with the positive character traits of Jesus studied in each PACE. :)

The support that we receive through Australian Christian College is second to none, and the teachers are readily accessible if you have any problems. ACC also prepares all of the reports and posts them to you. ;)

1/4 of all Children Bullied in Schools Survery
« Result #43 on Jun 1, 2009, 12:00pm »

In a recent survey of 124 schools and over 7,000 children, 1/4 of all school children in years four to nine are regularly bullied. :o

Children tend to lose confidence in their teachers or headmistresses to protect them, and by year nine, almost half of the students were either bullies or being bullied. :P

Schools can have an anti-bullying policy, but it appears that this isn't working. Most times the offender simply gets a severe talking to from the headmaster/headmistress.

In the new super schools, this will become more of a problem, with classes being segregated during class time, but the grounds will be a breeding ground for bullies - great if you are a bully, but not so much fun for the victim. :-/

 Diana Waring's Tour Downunder
« Result #44 on May 30, 2009, 4:47pm »

Christian book shops and other groups at risk
« Result #45 on May 30, 2009, 2:54pm »

I received this email today, and it is extremely important that we act on this promptly if Christian groups wish to retain the freedom to discriminate on the grounds of sexuality in their choice of staff.

Urgent request – Christian book shops and other groups at risk

A special message to SA supporters from Family Voice Australia

Scenario 1: “Mummy – is that person a man or a woman?”

You are shopping in your local Christian bookshop with your family. It is the last place you expected to be confronted with obviously “transgendered” staff, or staff who are flaunting what seem to be lesbian or homosexual mannerisms, hairstyles, tattoos or dress.

But if the SA Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill is passed in its present form in early June, stores like Word Books and Koorong would no longer have the freedom to choose staff with biblical standards of sexuality.

Scenario 2: “Christian welfare agency is disbanded after refusing to employ a lesbian couple as foster parents.”

The Catholic church in the UK and some US states has been forced to stop providing an adoption/fostering service after equal opportunity/anti-discrimination laws required all such services to include homosexual and lesbian couples as adoptive or foster parents.

Under the current SA Equal Opportunity Act, churches and faith-based organisations have the freedom to discriminate on the ground of sexuality in their choice of staff.

However under the new Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2008, churches would retain this freedom – but not para-church agencies or faith-based bookshops such as Word or Koorong. The bill would thus seriously undermine religious freedom in South Australia.

Family First MPs Dennis Hood and Robert Brokenshire tried hard to remove the harmful clause when the bill was debated in the upper house in April. They achieved several other important improvements with the help of the Liberal party, but only two Liberal MPs (Terry Stephens and Caroline Schaefer) agreed to support Family First on this issue. No one else voted with Family First.

We are grateful to upper house Liberal MPs for making improvements to the bill in other areas such as rights for Christian schools and removing unfettered power from the Equal Opportunity Commissioner. However we are dismayed that the Liberals declined as a party to support religious freedom for faith-based agencies.

ACTION NEEDED NOW

The bill is due for debate in the House of Assembly on 2 June 2009

Please – as a matter of urgency – send an email at least to your local MP plus Premier Rann and opposition leader Martin Hamilton-Smith, using the list below. Send this email to your Christian friends.

Use your own words and include your name and address. You could use the heading “Equal Opportunity Bill” or “Religious freedom under threat” or “Equal rights for people of faith”, or something else.

Examples of points you could make in your own words:

  • Please retain religious freedom in South Australia.

  • We support the changes to the Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2008 made in the Legislative Council in April, but a serious problem remains.

  • Please amend the Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill in order to keep section 50 (2) in the SA Equal Opportunity Act , so that faith-based groups retain their current freedom to choose staff who uphold their beliefs and values regarding sexuality.

  • Politicians have the freedom to choose staff with their political beliefs – faith groups should have the freedom to choose staff whose lifestyle upholds the group’s religious beliefs.

Do be polite. Angry, abusive emails will hurt our cause.

Below are the details of the 47 House of Assembly MPs. Click on the email address to send them an email. You could copy and paste your prepared wording to all of them if you wish.

FREE Product of the Week

Chocolate Fractions Part One: Is My Child Ready for This?
by Teacher Book Bag

You may be asking yourself, "How do I know if my child is ready for fractions?" Here are a few prerequisites that your child needs before fully understanding the concepts involved in working with fractions.

Does your child understand equal parts?

Does your child understand unequal parts?

A way to assess your child's knowledge of these two areas is by having them cut and fold objects on paper into equal or unequal parts. They can also look at a collection of objects on paper that are equal or unequal and identify which is which.
Enclosed in this free introduction are some activities to get you started. We invite you to look at our full preview.

 Cyber Bullying
« Result #52 on May 9, 2009, 4:54pm »

Does anybody know how prevalent cyber bullying is ??? The media is constantly talking about the prevalence of cyber bullying, but I wonder how prevalent it is in home schooled children ???

Our children are allowed onto the internet, but they haven't discussed any issues with cyber bullying with us, and we do provide opportunities for them to discuss things that happen on the internet. I think that it's important to keep the channels of discussion open. ;)

Perhaps it just doesn't happen in homeschooled children. :-/ Or maybe it is because we are much closer to our children. Either way, I often wonder if all of these things are blown out of all proportion by the media ???

Live Class! Teotwawki Write Sci-fi Right Now
by CraigsClasses

Class Description

This class is a collaborative writing workshop. During the course of this class, students will write freely on the topic. There will be brainstorming ideas, images, vocabulary words to incorporate, as well as peer review.Vocabulary words will be based on the common SAT vocabulary words. This serves two purposes, students will both learn new words and prepare for the SAT. It’s never too early to start preparing, and this is a great way to expand their lexicon. The student’s works will be published in a free electronic version as well as available in print. In order for me to do this, participants grant nonexclusive,non-alienable rights to their submissions. This class is open to students of all ages including mums and dads; therefore all stories MUST be G-rated. So fire up your pens and keyboards and start writing about THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

Ages/Grades: Any age/grade can participate as long as the parent understands that either the child or they will need to complete the online writing assignments. Short stories are encouraged.

See Full Class Details here.

Absolutely Free!

Let There Be Light
by Koumi Books

This is the first unit in what will become a collection of units centred on the 7 days of creation. The unit studies are written to encourage further research, but because it includes all the necessary material to do a thorough study; it is quite self-contained. This was done specifically with less developed areas in mind, where a library or the internet is not always readily available or only available at certain times.

The unit study contains a book of 15 pages, which contains all the basic information needed to understand light and its properties.

There are 15 worksheets (some with added information not contained in the book) that can be done by the child after reading the information. The formal worksheets can be included in lapbooks or notebooks.
The suggested hands-on activities either have instructions included or internet links to sites where detailed instructions can be found. Links for further research are also included.

Activities are divided into three levels, to help the parent customize their children’s learning or to accommodate different ages or levels of ability.
Each section includes Bible verses that correspond to the section and memory cards are included in the package.

It is my hope that this study will bless all who work with it, as it bears witness of the Light of the world, Jesus.

Georgia to Germany - Let Parents Homeschool
« Result #59 on Apr 8, 2009, 6:26pm »

The Georgia House of Representatives recently adopted House Resolution 850, which calls on the Federal Republic of Germany to “recognize the basic, fundamental rights of parents and allow their citizens to determine the educational upbringing of their own children.”

“America is founded on principles of personal liberty and that parents are responsible for the education upbringing of their children—not the government. The government exists to secure the rights of the people. The right of parents to educate their own children is a natural right.

Did you know that many American statesmen and leaders were homeschooled? However, in Germany the children are being forced to attend school, and the parents are not even given the basic right to homeschool.

Mrs Tina Liedle is going to Germany with a folk dancing troupe, and intends to encourage the nation's homeschoolers and talking to the general population about the right to homeschool. Liedle’s dance group, known as the “Highländlers”, will perform all over Germany and the Netherlands from May 25 - June 25.

HSLDA has been reporting for nearly a decade about the persecution of parents who seek to provide a quality education at home for their children.

Hi Deb,
Yes, the Biblical principles included in the PACE's are excellent, and the English PACE's for year 10 have wisdom principles as an eight page pullout, that are GREAT! ;D I like the way that all 60 character traits of Jesus are included for study each year. ;)

Once, a long time ago, I remember saying that I would never use a curriculum that uses testing, but times change, and I have learned that never is a very long time - never say never. :-[ These days, I realise that what people use is what suits them at the time, and as time went on, our needs have changed, and so has our curriculum.

We also still use LEM The Elements of Music, Rosetta Stone German and my son has been teaching graphic design for our computer studies, using Adobe Paintshop Pro CS4. [image]

I'm glad you are still doing so well with it. Our friends who use it passed a couple old paces to my daughter a while ago, and I did love all the Bible referencing, it is a good way to reinforce Christian principles. These paces were younger grades and they included little cartoons showing children being caring, thoughtful and polite. Nice!

Homeschooling is so important to Uwe Romeike that the classically trained pianist sold his beloved grand pianos to pay for moving his wife and five children from Germany to the Smoky Mountain foothills of Tennessee.

Romeike (roh-MY'-kee), his wife Hannelore, and their children live in a modest duplex about 40 miles northeast of Knoxville while they seek political asylum here. They say they were persecuted for their evangelical Christian beliefs and homeschooling their children in Germany, where school attendance is compulsory.

The HSLDA is representing the family in this case, and continues to represent many other German homeschoolers.

Like to read more, please click here.

There are only about 500 families homeschooling in Germany at the moment, experts estimate, but please keep praying for them. [image]

Hi Deb,
[image] !
We are still thoroughly enjoying studying with ACE, and our children are thriving with it. They are also enjoying being able to study independently, and to know that when they have finished their PACE's, they are finished for the day. :)

I must admit, that I am enjoying being able to spend the time out of school hours doing things that I enjoy, and being able to spend time with my children.

Our children are currently working towards their year 10 certificate, which they need to complete in order to be able to go on to complete their year 12 certificate, and when the children get up to this level, there will be work that they need to finish in the afternoons.

We live on a hobby farm, and the ACE is definitely working well for us. I guess that it all depends on what you are looking for in a curriculum, and what you hope to achieve as an end result.

I like the way that everything is taught concretely, and that, as in the Bible, line builds upon line, precept upon precept (Isaiah28:10).

ACE curriculum is of an exceptionally high standard, and the help and encouragement that we receive from the Australian Christian College is excellent. I also like the idea of not having to complete my own report cards, as Australian Christian College complete the report cards for me. ;)

Hi Jillian,
I have just joined this board, thankyou. I am curious as to whether you are still enjoying ACE. I have heard so many conflicting thoughts on it. We have friends who use it and are happy with it, others who have used it and felt it was too much of learning for the sake of answering the test, then forgetting and that it was too dry.
I haven't used it, although I have considered it sometimes when I feel that we need something else.
From my observations it seems to be an excellent curriculum particularly for children being brought up on a farm or in a family business. It seems to provide the accademic side which the children finish in the morning, then they can get on with the practical activities involved in running the farm etc. It seems like an excellent balance.
I would love to hear how you are all going with it.
Deb

 Banana Importation from Philippines
« Result #71 on Mar 21, 2009, 12:18pm »

Our government is always telling us to buy Australian, but now they are opening the way for bananas from the Philippines to come into Australia. [image]

This not only opens our banana industry to diseases, but also to a loss of jobs. In the present economic climate, I would have thought that the Australian government would be trying to preserve jobs in Australia, not send them overseas. [image]

The Highländlers, a group of Georgia homeschoolers, will be taking a mission team into Europe this summer. They were prompted by the persecution of American missionary families and German Christians who will not yield their children to the strong indoctrination of the state. Missionary families are being forced to withdraw from Germany; parents are being imprisoned and heavily fined, children forcefully taken from their homes, and families are being compelled to seek political asylum in other countries (including the United States).

If you would like to read more, please click here.

Please continue to pray for German homeschoolers and the mission team who are endeavouring to help them. [image]

Math Mammoth Clock
by Math Mammoth

Math Mammoth Clock is a work text that covers telling time and reading the clock, telling time intervals, and understanding the calendar.

The book contains both textbook explanations and exercises, and is designed to be very easy to teach from, requiring very little teacher preparation.

Math Mammoth Clock covers reading the clock, figuring out simple time intervals, and using the calendar, all in one book. The topics progress starting from the first grade level to the third grade level. Therefore, you also can let your child work the pages of this book in different time periods, and not go through it all at once, depending on your child's current level.

The lessons are divided to the grade-levels this way: reading the clock to the half-hour is first grade material; reading the clock to the five-minute intervals is second grade; and reading the clock to the minute is third grade level. I realize this is somewhat arbitrary, and there is no need to follow it exactly but I want to explain it so you can keep it in mind that the material in this book does get more difficult towards the end.

You will need a practice clock, such as an alarm clock, where the child can turn the clock hands. Reading the clock is a skill that will be used in everyday situations, so this topic (fortunately) is one that children also learn by experience, and do not easily forget once learned.

I guess the round robin would depend on getting say 6 or so people interested in starting and then one person starts writing to number twp on list who after a specified time adds on their news and passes it onto the next person. I think it could work if you kept the gap between receiving and sending on a maximum of 2 weeks. But this is probably only hypothetical as I don't know of other homeschoolers interstate who might be interested,do you?

Hi Alison,
No, I don't know of other homeschoolers interstate. Well, I do, but I don't know their address, if that makes sense. :P So, I guess that we need another four people to get it started ???

Sure sounds interesting! ;D

Hi Alison,
[image] to Australian Secondhand Homeschool Curriculum and Books!

My name is Jillian, wife to my dh for 23 years, and I have been homeschooling our two children for almost seven years, now. :D We have used a variety of different curricula, but have now settled on ACE PACE's with ACASDE (Australian Christian Academy School of Distance Education), and our children are enjoying the work. ;)

The round robin thing sounds different, but who would start it moving, and how many people would keep it moving ???
Blessings,
Jillian

 Round Robin letter
« Result #80 on Mar 8, 2009, 2:18pm »

Hi
I am Alison, wife to dh for nearly 26 years and mother of 7 wonderful children. We have homeschooled for many years...it is embedded in our family culture! I now homeschool only the two youngest as four of the older ones are doing uni and the other year 12 with our Senior Clollege.
I saw this idea on an American forum and thought it might be fun to try here. You write a family letter and send it onto the first person on a list of families. They then write their letter and add it to yours and post it to the next person. The letter writing continues until the letter ends up back at the first person when I guess it could begin all over again. I like the idea of getting ordinary mail in an age when everything is electronic(says she writing on her computer!)The only thing I can't figure out is how the people who wrote earlier would get all the later news from people, unless that was posted to them at the end of the round. Anyway would love to hear from anyone who is interested in doing this or if you have done it before.
blessings
Alison

 HOMESCHOOLER FAMILIES DEVESTATED BY BUSHFIRES
« Result #83 on Mar 7, 2009, 4:37pm »

Hello,

All of Australia is in shock at the carnage metered out through the
Victorian Bushfires.

HEA has been in touch with the Victorian Home Education Network and they have informed us that several homeschooling families have been affected by the bushfires. Details are still sketchy, but we understand that some homeschooling families have lost their homes. We know of homeschoolers in the Kinglake, Steele's Creek, Kilmore, Broadford and Beechworth areas who may have lost their homes or seen their neighbours' homes burn down.

If you would like to donate directly to these homeschooling families you can deposit any monies into the HEA account and we will channel the funds through to Victoria HEN who are in contact with the families and will offer assistance where needed.

Name: Home Education Association
BSB: 062 262
Account No: 10161154
Reference: VICb'fires
Email: secretary@hea.asn.au
confirming you have made the payment. We will acknowledge with receipt.

HEA will channel 100% of the donations to home educating families, nothing will be used in admin costs.

Thank you,
Esther Lacoba
HEA President

 Home Movie Entertainment
« Result #84 on Mar 7, 2009, 4:16pm »

We have just ordered Prince Caspian from Heritage Home Entertainment. Yes, I know that it has been out for a while, but things happen slowly in the country, you know.

Heritage Home Entertainment have some excellent movies, and they are all morally excellent viewing. I thought that the next one we might buy will be One Night with the King, which is a story about Queen Esther, and how God raised her up from the position of a Jew orphan to save her people from destruction. ;)

School & Chore Charts by Notebooking Nook.com

A collection of charts for home & school. Included are cards to add to your child's chart for both chores and school.

My suggestion for these charts would be to print them on card stock and then print the chore cards on magnet sheets. You could then use them on a white board or refrigerator. Another choice would be to also print the cards on card stock and place velcro in the blocks of the charts and backs of the cards and use them that way. I would also suggest that you laminate your charts.

The larger cards could also be printed onto magnet sheets. You could use the blank page as a guide to create a larger chart for your child or to allow your child to add other chores or subjects.

Free!
